Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
It has been 4 years since the last installment of the series. First movie was the only one memorable to me since it was a fresh concept. The latest installation is definitely not up to par to the first.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the latest Pirates of the Caribbean 33% and I understood why. To me, unless you are a fan for the Pirates of the Carribean’s series, you can probably wait for the DVD.
I was actually bored with the first half of the movie. 2 hours and 17 minutes is probably too long for this movie. The jokes were getting a bit old since they shown most of the funny parts in the trailer. Ian McShane did a great job playing as the villain Blackbeard. They left the ending open with Jack getting the Black Pearl back for the next movie (rumor on Johnny Depp was in talk with Jerry Bruckheimer).
The makeups and costumes for the mermaids were impeccable natural looking. The makeup for Barbosa however looked funny. The faith-filled Phillip and the mermaid Syrena love story fill up the hole from the missing of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.
Pirates of the Caribbean series are always known for its crafty dialogue. A couple of memorable quotes from the movie:
Jack Sparrow: “Captain, I wish to report a mutiny. I can name fingers and point names.”
Angelica: “Why is it we can never meet without you pointing something at me?”
Jack Sparrow: “You know that feeling you get when you’re standing in a high place… sudden urge to jump?… I don’t have it.”
Summer blockbusters for this year have been dull so far. I need a good fix and soon.
My Grade: B
